Unlocking the Potential of Biotech Startups with Efficient R&D

The biotech industry is one of the most exciting and innovative fields to work in today. But as any biotech startup knows, there's a lot of work that goes into bringing a product or service to market. And while innovation is the lifeblood of the industry, there's no room for inefficiency.

Efficiency is a major concern in the biotech industry, as it can greatly impact the cost and speed of research and development (R&D). Small inefficiencies can creep in at every stage of R&D, snowballing to slow down biotech startups in their race to bring products and services to market. At Scispot, we have built solutions to address many sources of inefficiency, creating an integrated lab management toolkit to make biostartups efficient and scalable from Day 1.

1. Data management

Biotech labs generate large amounts of data. Managing, processing, and analyzing this data can be time-consuming and complex, leading to delays as well as errors in data analysis.

Scispot’s Solutions

Scispot's Labsheets integrates and standardizes data and metadata, in different formats, from hundreds of sources, including lab equipment, legacy databases, and third-party apps like Google sheets. This makes biotech R&D data ML-ready.

The platform lets you combine data from multiple sources into a single Labsheet that can be used to create custom reports. It also enables you to share your results with colleagues across the globe—and even collaborate with them on the same Labsheet!

Knowledge graphs and a dashboard make it quick and easy to visualize and compare data.

Scispot’s Datarooms allow labs to selectively and securely share data with investors, customers, partners, CROs, and other stakeholders.

2. Sample management

Keeping track of samples and ensuring that they are properly stored and labeled can be a major challenge in biotech labs. This can lead to wasted time searching for samples or errors in experiments if samples are mislabeled.

Scispot’s Solution

Scispot offers the most intuitive and configurable sample management platform. With Scispot, labs can register, track, and store all parent samples and aliquots with a complete audit trail. Labs can also prepare multi-well plates and process samples by using templates and linking data from related samples (such as DNA and protein samples), for example. The Scispot system automatically assigns UUIDs and barcodes to each registered sample, so you can track them even by scanning with mobile devices at the bench.

3. Inventory Management

Wet lab work requires many different reagents and so biotech labs can waste a lot of time sourcing and reordering inventory items. If reagents unexpectedly run out, experiments can’t be done until they are replaced.

Scispot’s Solution

Scispot has integrated with Quartzy to automate inventory management. Labs can use Labsheets and templates to link their inventory to experimental execution so that product levels are automatically updated whenever a reagent is used in an experiment. Labs can also set reordering thresholds so that whenever a product falls below that threshold, an order is automatically placed in Quartzy.

4. Workflow inefficiencies

Labs often have complex workflows, with multiple steps and multiple people involved, which can lead to inefficiencies and delays.

Scispot's Solution

Workflow templates allow labs to make sure everyone always has the most up-to-date protocols. Lab members can use these templates to ‘drag and drop’ and design experiments with lightning speed. Scientists can mark steps in the protocol as completed, so everyone knows which step they are at in real time.

5. Lack of automation

Many biotech labs still rely on manual processes, which can be time-consuming and prone to errors. Automation can help to reduce errors and increase efficiency in lab workflows.

Scispot’s Solution

Scispot let’s you set up templates for integrations, alerting, reporting, data cleansing, data ingestion, process automation such as product reordering and equipment maintenance.

Quartzy integration, Labsheets, and templates allow labs to automate inventory management.

6. Data Integration

Biotech startups often have data spread across different tools, devices, labs, and partners. This results in a lot of wasted time and effort spent trying to bring all the information together and make sense out of it.

Scispot’s Solution

Scispot is interoperable with other biotech and productivity software such as ChemDraw, Quartzy, Google Drive, Microsoft Sharepoint, Slack and more. Scispot integrates with 100s of 3rd party apps and instruments, enabling labs to connect with other labs and exchange information.

7. Lack of Standardization

Most biotech labs use different methods, protocols, and data formats, which can make it difficult to share data and collaborate with other labs. Standardization can help to improve efficiency by making it easier to share data and collaborate.

Scispot’s Solution

Scispot is a one-stop shop to templatize your lab protocols, workflows, databases, and standard operating procedures.

With Scispot, you can create a library of templates for protocols, sheets, multi-well plates, databases, sequences, and more. These templates are fully customizable, so you can add notes and instructions to them as needed. You can also create version histories so that you can work with multiple versions of each template if needed.

Scispot makes it easy to design experiments with lightning speed because all the elements are already pre-configured in a way that makes sense for your research.

8. Regulatory compliance

Biotech labs need to comply with a wide range of regulatory requirements, such as 21 CFR Part 11, which can add an additional layer of complexity and inefficiency.

Scispot’s Solution

When you're working on a research project, it's important to know that your information is secure. Scispot is committed to keeping your data safe and secure, with the highest security and compliance standards. We maintain a full audit trail and version history of your research, so you can always access the most up-to-date version of your data.

We are certified SOC 2 compliant, which means we've been audited by an independent third party who found that our controls were effective in protecting customers' data. We are also 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and GDPR compliant—we have systems in place to ensure that all researchers are protected from data breaches or accidental exposure of their personal information. Additionally, we back up customers' data every hour and encrypt the data at rest and in transit.

A complete biotech management platform

We are building the best tech stack for biotech companies. Our toolkit is completely customizable via graphical user interface (GUI) and command line interface (CLI) so you can design exactly what you need to run your company. If you need help, our Customer Service team is ready to provide the integrations and customizations that you need. With Scispot you can standardize your data and metadata formats, automate workflows and processes, leverage cloud storage with regular data backup, use version control for data and code, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
